Overview

Who We Are

Bam Animal Clinics (BAM) is a Ugandan community-based animal welfare organisation established in 2009 to improve the health and welfare of animals while strengthening the livelihoods, wellbeing and resilience of the communities that depend on them.

For more than 17 years, BAM has worked at the intersection of animal health, animal welfare, community development and One Health, delivering practical veterinary and welfare services to communities that often have limited access to professional veterinary care.

From our beginnings as a community-focused veterinary initiative, BAM has grown into an organisation with experience in veterinary outreach, working-animal welfare, companion-animal care, livestock health, rabies prevention, animal welfare education, responsible pet population management, veterinary professional training and environmental conservation.

“Healthy animals contribute to healthy people, stronger livelihoods and healthier communities.”

Our Journey

Our Story

Bam Animal Clinics was established in 2009 in response to the need for accessible, affordable and humane animal healthcare within underserved communities in Uganda.

Over the years, BAM has taken veterinary and animal welfare services beyond conventional clinic settings and directly into communities. Through mobile veterinary outreach, community education, professional training and partnerships, we have reached animal owners who might otherwise have little or no access to veterinary services.

Our experience has shown us that animal welfare cannot be separated from the realities of the people who depend on animals.

Our Work

What We Do

Bam Animal Clinics provides a broad range of animal health and welfare services, including:

1

Community Veterinary Outreach

We take veterinary services directly to rural and underserved communities through mobile and community-based clinics. Services include clinical examination, diagnosis, treatment, preventive healthcare, follow-up and referral where necessary.

2

Working Donkey Welfare

BAM provides veterinary and welfare services to working donkeys that support rural households through transportation, carrying water, agricultural produce and other essential goods. Our work includes treatment, health assessment, wound management, parasite control, nutrition advice, owner education and humane handling.

3

Donkey Hoof Care

We provide practical hoof-care services to working donkeys, including examination and appropriate trimming of overgrown and abnormal hooves. We also educate owners about regular hoof inspection and maintenance to prevent pain, injury and reduced mobility.

4

Animal Welfare Education

BAM conducts community education and awareness programmes covering responsible animal ownership, humane handling, disease prevention, nutrition, housing, timely treatment and other aspects of animal welfare.

5

Rabies Prevention and Awareness

We support rabies prevention through community education, responsible dog ownership, vaccination activities and awareness of the risks associated with rabies. Our work contributes to protecting both animal and human health.

6

Spay and Neuter Services

BAM promotes responsible companion-animal population management through spay and neuter services for dogs and cats. These programmes help reduce unwanted litters, abandonment and uncontrolled breeding while promoting healthier companion animals.

7

Preventive Animal Health and Vaccination

We provide preventive animal-health services including vaccination, parasite control, routine health assessments, disease-prevention advice and owner education. Prevention helps protect animals, households and livelihoods from avoidable disease and losses.

8

Veterinary CPD and Professional Training

BAM contributes to strengthening Uganda's veterinary workforce through Continuing Professional Development (CPD) training for veterinary professionals and Veterinary Para-Professionals. BAM has served as a CPD training hub and has been mandated by the Uganda Veterinary Council to provide CPD training in animal welfare since 2016.

9

Livestock Health and Extension Services

We provide livestock health and extension support to farming communities, helping animal owners improve disease prevention, husbandry, nutrition, productivity and general animal management.

10

One Health and Biodiversity Conservation

BAM increasingly connects animal welfare with human wellbeing, sustainable livelihoods and environmental conservation. Our work in the Mount Elgon landscape demonstrates how improved animal health and community livelihoods can contribute to reducing pressure on natural resources and supporting biodiversity conservation.

How We Work

Our Approach

🏘️

Community-Based

We believe that sustainable change begins within communities. Rather than waiting for people to travel long distances to access services, BAM takes veterinary care, education and practical solutions closer to the people who need them.

❤️

Welfare-Centred

We believe animals deserve to live healthy lives free from unnecessary pain, suffering and neglect. Veterinary treatment is therefore combined with education that helps owners understand the welfare needs of their animals.

🌍

One Health

Animal health, human health and environmental health are interconnected. BAM's work therefore considers the wider impact of animal health interventions on families, communities and the environment.

🤲

Practical & Inclusive

Our programmes are designed around the realities of rural communities. We work with animal owners, farmers, women, youth, community leaders, veterinary professionals, local governments and other stakeholders.

🤝

Partnership-Based

BAM recognises that lasting impact requires collaboration. We work with communities, veterinary professionals, government institutions, development organisations, animal welfare organisations and other partners to expand access to services and strengthen local capacity.

Special Programme

Our Working Donkey Programme

Working donkeys are an important part of rural livelihoods in many Ugandan communities. They transport water, agricultural produce, firewood and other goods and often provide an affordable means of transportation for households with limited resources.

BAM's working-donkey welfare programme therefore goes beyond treating individual animals. We work with owners and communities to improve health, nutrition, harnessing, hoof care, humane handling and general welfare.

Our donkey welfare work also increasingly connects animal welfare with environmental conservation. In the Mount Elgon landscape, healthier working donkeys can support household livelihoods and help reduce the vulnerability that may contribute to unsustainable use of natural resources.

This approach places the welfare of the animal within the wider context of people, livelihoods and the environment.

Professional Development

Strengthening Veterinary Professionals

BAM's contribution to animal welfare extends beyond direct community service delivery.

Since 2016, BAM has been involved in providing animal welfare-related CPD opportunities for veterinary professionals and Veterinary Para-Professionals under the framework of the Uganda Veterinary Council.

Through professional development, BAM helps strengthen the capacity of veterinary personnel to understand and apply animal welfare principles in everyday veterinary practice. We believe that strengthening veterinary professionals creates a multiplier effect: better-trained professionals can reach and positively influence many more animals and communities.

Where We Work

Our Geographic Focus

BAM has worked with communities in different parts of Uganda, with an increasing focus on underserved rural areas.

Our recent work has included communities within the Mount Elgon landscape, including Bukwo, Kween, Kapchorwa, Namisindwa and Mbale, where animal welfare, rural livelihoods and environmental conservation are closely connected.

We continue to work where the need for accessible veterinary and animal welfare services is greatest.

Partnerships

Our Partnerships

Over the years, BAM has worked with and received support or collaboration from organisations and institutions including Animal-kind International (AKI), WTS Vets United Germany, Project AnimalAid, local government authorities, the Uganda Veterinary Council, FAO, the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) and other stakeholders.

These partnerships have enabled BAM to expand community outreach, strengthen professional capacity, support working-animal welfare and develop innovative approaches to animal health and community development. We value every partnership because collaboration allows limited resources to reach more animals and communities.

Our Purpose

Why BAM Matters

Millions of people in rural communities depend directly or indirectly on animals.

🐴

When an animal becomes sick or injured, the consequences can extend beyond the animal itself. A working donkey may no longer transport water or agricultural produce.

🐄

Loss of livestock may reduce household income and food security. An unvaccinated dog can create a public-health risk.

🐕

Poor animal welfare can also contribute to unnecessary suffering and economic losses.

BAM works to address these challenges by bringing together veterinary care, animal welfare, education, prevention, professional capacity building and community development.

We believe that improving animal welfare is not only about helping animals.
It is also about helping people.

Our Vision

A Uganda where animals are treated humanely, communities have access to appropriate veterinary services, animal owners have the knowledge and resources to care responsibly for their animals, and animal welfare contributes to healthy, resilient and sustainable communities.

Our Mission

To improve animal health and welfare through accessible community-based veterinary services, education, professional capacity building and partnerships, while promoting One Health, sustainable livelihoods and environmental conservation.

The Future

Looking Ahead

BAM is building on more than 17 years of experience to strengthen and expand community-based animal welfare services in Uganda.
